Signs of Mokum
KAT2013 – “Signs of Mokum”, an event with an artistic approach towards various key aspects of the city’s history and local identity. Consequently the event is built on three core principles. These stand in the style of three St. Andrew’s crosses – the Coat of Arms of Amsterdam. Our core principles are: Diversity, Foundation and Identity.
The core principles
X → Diversity
Amsterdam is characterized by cultural diversity and defined by local and international influences. The exhibition takes this up by showcasing artwork of 40 local and international key-figures of the young contemporary art movement.
X → Foundation
Based on the city’s history and moniker (Mokum = safe haven, trade), a big cohesive mural painting themed “historical shipping and trade” will be created. It reflects one of the foundations of the city, past and present.
X → Identity
Amsterdam holds a strong historical, cultural and artistic identity. Various landmarks, symbols and institutions expressing this identity are celebrated during the year of 2013. In particular, the city’s residents shape and define an integral part of Amsterdam’s character. This is why the residents and connoisseurs of Amsterdam are invited participate in this self-defining event.
