For the people that don’t know you, who is Ard Doko?
Ard Doko is a 22 year old street artist from a small town in The Netherlands, called Callantsoog.
How would you describe your work?
The best way to describe my work is like a delirium. I tend to be chaotic while painting and the images are all mixed into each other. Other than that, probably dark and aggressive.
What influenced you to be a artist?
I picked up painting at a time were it wasn’t sure if I would make it in this life. Having to deal with a lot of issues at that time, I was looking for something that would keep me calm. Music and painting seemed to be the two options for me and eventually I got more recognition doing graffiti than making music.
You came to Amsterdam from Callantsoog, what was it like growing up there and eventually moving to Amsterdam?
Callantsoog, apart from the beach, has nothing to offer. It’s a small coastal village in the northern part of The Netherlands and pretty boring. When I started to do graffiti there it was hard to find walls that weren’t part of someone’s house. When I came to Amsterdam I felt like a little kid in a candy shop. I can walk to shops to buy paint, something I used to have to travel at least 20 kilometers for by bicycle from Callantsoog, and there is a big art scene in Amsterdam. There are a lot more opportunities for me here.
What has been the highlight of your artist life up until now?
The past four years have been crazy for me. It’s hard for me to choose, I had some shows in the USA, a big live painting tour in The USA and Mexico, and I had my first big solo show in Amsterdam. Between all those things I guess the Stick Together show of Max Zorn in Amsterdam last year was the highlight for me though. Just to see my work hanging between the people I followed on the Internet and getting their respect meant a lot to me.
What does the future hold for Ard Doko?
Currently working on some shows in The Netherlands. We’re still thinking about doing some live painting shows in Europe but I can’t give exact dates yet, hopefully soon though. The biggest project for me this year will be in October in Peoria,Illinois (USA). I will be doing some huge murals there for a big project they are having. Pretty stoked about doing that!
